5 Reasons Women Need To Lift Weights

Women Need To Lift Weights
Move By Design

Almost every result women are searching for is a side effect of increasing lean muscle.

Forget about the myths of getting too bulky or looking manly; neither of those are legitimate concerns without performance-enhancing drugs or some serious genetic predisposition.

When you combine a supervised strength training program and eating by design, here are some of the results:

BURN BODY FAT FASTER

If you’ve bought into the myth that cardio is the fastest way to lose fat, you’re missing out on the number one time-tested strategy.

Lifting heavy weight is the cornerstone to fat loss, not endless hours on the treadmill.

SPARK YOUR METABOLISM

Have you wondered how to keep those calories burning even while you are asleep?

By helping to build lean muscle, strength training turns your body into an engine that constantly burns fuel day and night. That’s a side effect no amount of cardio can match.

LOOK MORE SLIM

You can’t shape muscles, but you can build more lean muscle. With less body fat on top of them, that translates into smaller clothing sizes without cutting the calories.

BOOST SELF-ESTEEM

Strength doesn’t just come in physical form. Moving heavy things delivers a power-packed shot to your mental state as well. That makes you feel great on all accounts.

BUILD HEALTHY BONES

One major fear women have is developing osteoporosis, and the #1 strategy for bone building is NOT more calcium. Learn the basics to weight weight-bearing exercise and start building healthier bones.

How many of these benefits appeal to you?

5 Signs You May Have An Autoimmune Problem And How To Start “The Fix”

autoimmune
Life By DesignUncategorised

Is your body failing? Is it turning on itself and leaving you in pain, debilitated, and frustrated – you could have an Autoimmune Disease.

WHAT IS AN AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE?

Autoimmune Diseases come in many different forms, some of which you know of, others that are more rare, and even some that would likely surprise you. Conditions such as multiple sclerosis, lupus, thyroid diseases, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, IBS, psoriasis, and many more.

With millions affected worldwide, autoimmune disorders are now becoming a leading cause of death among young and middle-aged women!

WHAT CAUSES AN AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE?

Although this is a complicated topic, the common thread that defines this category is the “body attacking itself”.

Operating as an organized, well-orchestrated system, the body maintains tight regulation of every single activity in order to best adapt, survive and hopefully thrive in a given environment.

The one caveat, and what is found to be a major contributing factor to autoimmunity is the one’s lifestyle choices. Yes, genetics surely play a role, but it’s the decisions you make that will have the largest effect.

Factors range from exposure to toxins like heavy metals or mould, bacterial overgrowth and infection, or chronic inflammation from numerous sources including gut permeability and a sedentary lifestyle. Additional factors include stress, medication use, poor sleep…essentially anything that negatively impacts your health and body’s function could precipitate autoimmunity.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS?

  1. Joint and muscle pain.
  2. Fatigue.
  3. Weight loss.
  4. Fever.
  5. Dry eyes, mouth, or skin.

HOW TO START “THE FIX”

The traditional medical approach for an autoimmune disease will very likely include immune suppressant and anti-inflammatory medication. While that may work for some short-term symptom reduction, those medications are not without serious long-term side effects and will only address the collateral damage from these conditions.

Here are some steps that will yield big returns by improving the body’s function and giving it the best chance at slowing down the process and in many cases, even building better health than what had existed prior to an autoimmunity diagnosis.

Exercise

It almost goes without saying, but engaging in a regular training program that improves strength, mobility, and conditioning will have a positive effect on nearly every measurable aspect of the body’s function. This includes immune system health and reduction of chronic inflammation, both important outcomes in those suffering from an autoimmune condition.

Diet

Another no-brainer… obviously diet is a key component to improving the chances of recovery. However, what may surprise you most is what is NOT included in the recommended fuel sources.

With grain consumption playing a role in gut permeability and leading to autoimmunity, removing grains (especially gluten-containing grains) is a fundamental step in the healing and repair process.

If damage to the gut remains unchanged, improvements and even resolution of some disorders is unlikely.

In addition, reducing processed carbohydrates while increasing quality protein and good fats will accelerate the benefits to someone undergoing an autoimmune progression.

Stress Reduction

Lastly, anything you can to improve or enhance your body’s ability to handle stress is going to be a massive bonus. This includes correcting neuro-spinal problems, getting more quality rest, managing your workload, and disconnecting from our digital devices more often.

Do you have an Autoimmune Disease? What has worked for you? We’d love to hear from you!

How Exercise Can Grow Your Child a Bigger, Better Brain

brain
Move By Design

It’s not rocket science that regular exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle for adults and children. Yet, very few are aware that exercise could build your child a bigger, better brain (and possibly even help them become a rocket scientist!)

Exercise Works

The most commonly recognized benefits of physical activity include:

  • Stronger muscles
  • Increased bone density
  • Better coordination
  • Improved cardiovascular function
  • Enhanced insulin sensitivity

The end result is a major decrease in lifestyle-related illnesses such as Cancer, Heart Disease & Diabetes, and many other related conditions in adults and children. These are all wonderful side effects of a consistent exercise program.

Less commonly known are the exciting effects of exercise on the brain and who is more important to target with these effects than the developing brains of our most precious assets… our children.

What’s The Big Deal?

Not only do kids have the most neuro-plasticity (ability to change their brain and nervous systems) but they have the most potential as well. Think about it, anything done to improve their health or performance is multiplied exponentially the sooner positive change begins.

You’ve probably heard or seen this ancient proverb that captures the concept perfectly:

“As the twig is bent, so grows the tree.”

How would you love your kids to start experiencing any one of these benefits?

  • Higher IQ
  • Increase brain cell growth
  • Boosted self-esteem
  • Deeper sleep
  • Enhanced cognition

How Does It Happen?

First off, exercise improves blood flow to the brain which increases oxygenation of the cerebral tissues and number two, keeping up with a frequent fitness routine increases neurological input into the brain.

Think of your training sessions not only working your muscles and your lungs but also feeding the brain. In a sense, it’s a form of neurological nutrition that is vital to the growth and development of your neurons.

Even better, making exercise a habit for you and your kids has a long-term protective effect. How about reversing the normal age-related brain shrinkage as a bonus for your efforts?

Whether you’re worried about a future with Alzheimer’s or Parkinson’s or you just want to begin thinking more clearly…

The best time to start training for a bigger, better brain is today, the next best time was 40 years ago. Let’s make sure our kids get ahead of the game and actively engage in a regular fitness routine.

Not only will their body benefit but their brain will too.

15 Ways To Survive The Cold & Flu Season Naturally

flu season
Life By Design

Scratchy throat, fever, stuffy nose and the host of other symptoms that come along for the ride… here are 15 ways to survive the cold & flu season naturally.

THE REMEDY METHOD

When you or your kids are feeling down in the dumps, the only thing you want is to feel better!

The Remedy Method includes any intervention that will help mitigate the effects that come from “processing” a cold or flu. It may be the body itself that is responsible for healing and repair, but most of us do not demonstrate patience as a primary quality.  The Remedy Method addresses the question “What can I do in the meantime?”

Many of these steps may not necessarily increase your health, but that’s not the point with this approach.

The point is to FEEL BETTER while you HEAL.

  1. Rest.
  2. Gargle with salt water.
  3. Drink hot tea.
  4. Garlic.
  5. Take a hot bath.
  6. Try a saline nasal rinse.
  7. Steam your face.
  8. Use zinc acetate lozenges.
  9. Put Vicks on your chest and feet.
  10. Echinacea.
  11. Sleep with your head elevated.
  12. Take some Vitamin C.
  13. Hot water with lemon.
  14. Drink apple cider vinegar.
  15. Use a humidifier.

THE HEALTH-BUILDING METHOD

Whether it’s a cold, the flu, or any illness for that matter…the one common thread to prevention and recovery is the strength of the immune system.

The Health Building Method is by far the best approach to follow as the result of your efforts will save you more pain and suffering than any remedy ever could!

  1. Eat real food.

Keep it simple. Healthy animal protein & fats, vegetables & fruits, safe starches. Everything else, either reduce to a minimum or remove entirely.

  1. Train.

Lift weights and sprint. Sure, you can add in some other stuff but don’t expect results without the fundamentals.

  1. Fill in the gaps.

Omega 3s, vitamin D, and probiotics. Thousands of additional supplements can be found on the shelves but very few will yield much impact. Start and stick with the basics.

  1. Get quality rest.

Turn off your phones, get to bed prior to midnight, and wake up early.

  1. Build your brain.

Have your spine and nervous system examined by a Corrective Chiropractor. Sounds odd, but it’s not…once you understand how the body works.

WHICH METHOD IS BEST?

It depends.

What are you trying to accomplish?

Are you interested in only feeling better or would you prefer to heal well and recover?

There’s no need to choose…

These two methods can be combined, just be sure to make The Health Building Method your primary, day-to-day approach.
